My desktop computer takes forever to update. Decided to start the process before leaving for work today and let it run in my absence. Returned 12 hours later. 72% complete. Hell no. Shut that down. I would like to use this thing tonight without Microsoft eating 90% of my CPU while the disk whines at 90 decibels. I need a better computer. Or at least to give this one a clean Windows install. After years of functioning without a crash, I've been getting a BSOD every couple of weeks. Always a different error code.
No.20602
>>20601You could get an SSD, that would probably help a lot. But you most likely won't be able to run windows 11. And since I can tell from your post that you are a luser, you will need Windows. October is when you will need a new computer.
Maybe do everything on your smartphone instead, since only spazes and nerds use fugly PCs in 2023?

It was only recently that I learned that pewter is a tin alloy.
It's less embarrassing in German because they are both called "Zinn" in everyday speak. Pewter is technically "Hartzinn" though. So a tin plate or cup would both be a "Zinnteller" or "Zinnbecher".
Also, while lurking I had Tommy (The Motion Picture) on. I know that back in the day and were I a girl I would have had a huge crush on Roger Daltrey. No homo.

Ex gf has apparently gone full catholic. It’s been almost a year now I still do not forgive myself for everything that happened. I hope time will make me forget a bit, I think I’ll go for therapy instead of religion, or psychoanalysis.

If you feel like there's no chance of that ever working (the being chill about it-part, not the girlfriend-part) maybe consider therapy. But psychoanalysis is a method developed by one guy 120 years ago, how about CBT or something ?

>>20637>Could you perceivably just get another girlfriend and try to be a little more chill about it all?Not at the moment I’m afraid. My problems may predate my first relationships.
Psychoanalysis is funnier. If I was to do it I’d do it with a degree of distance from the discourse, the magical thinking associated with it makes self appropriation of the concepts easier. From my experience, people practicing it also have a less moralistic response to thing you tell them. Plus I had bad experience with therapist and psychiatrists and a good one with some "serious" psychoanalyst, that made me actually get significantly better in a short amount of time.
>>20640It’s the French one. She already had ties to traditionalist catholic communities by her upbringing. But she’s now knee deep in it thinking about some nerdy catholic concepts and giving speeches to nerdy traditionalists.

I burned some vacation time this week. I've never taken a full week of time at once but prefer to parcel out my accumulated hours over an extended period, giving me some easy weeks whenever I choose. Work is better when it is optional, and keeping ~3 weeks of paid time off in my back pocket creates that illusion. Anyway, I have the next three days off and am definitely going to waste them doing nothing.

>>20601Been thinking about this on and off and imho the issue with buying PC components right now is that you could get a used CPU or something for cheap to achieve a big performance increase alongside an extra stick of RAM and an SSD, but from a software perspective, MS is ending support for Windows 10 and a lot of older CPUs don’t support Win11 even if they technically meet the base performance requirements.
Though if the PC seems to be working fine except for writing and reading files it points towards drive failure.
No.20648
>>20646>drive failureThat's what I worry about, and why I backed up every file on an external drive. This thing might die, but it's not going to wipe out my data. I don't require a high performing PC, as I only use it for basic functions, but a replacement would still cost in the low hundreds. Hate to do that if it's not necessary. So, I'm basically taking a wait-and-see attitude. If things stay the same or get better, I do nothing. If they get worse, I reinstall the OS. If that doesn't help, I spend money.
>MS is ending support for Windows 10I am not prepared for this.

Felt okay today. The day kinda went in a blur.
Helped make another table ornament. This one is a gift to someone else.
Went to class. On the way home I saw an 1892 copy of the Nibelungenlied. It's very nice looking but I didn't get it even though I was really tempted.
Saw the latest propaganda poster campaign. This year's topic is the "New Economic Policy".
The slogan is
Hungary can do it!.
Also got a "National Consultation" poll like usual. I filled it out and dropped it in a mailbox. My main motivation was to just to be able to tick the box to say "No, the pensioners don't need more money".
Took a book back to the library. I couldn't find the dropbox but it turns out they replaced it with a "smart shelf". You put the book on the shelf and it immediately knows which book it is and you can also request a certificate you returned it.
>>20648Well, you have around a year until they drop support for it and there's always
Linux.
(Or you might actually have a CPU that supports 11. I know mine doesn't but I don't daily drive my windows PC so it should be fine until 10 becomes really abandoned. (Honestly just banking on Proton actually getting good enough that I don't ever have to bother with Windows again even for gaming. However little gaming I actually do.)
