It usually means "mentally ill" in this context.

I recently fell back in a tabletop frenzy. (Re)discovered the Gazeteers books and the very active online community of old school DnD, notably the vaults of Pandius : http://pandius.com/. I just keep reading about the universe and the rules in my free time, it's incredible what this community is capable to produce.

I'm currently working on three D&D campaigns all using the same rules and set into the world of Mystara. First campaign is three of my nerdy friends and set in the Great Duchy of Karameikos, they're playing a kawful good female cleric, a young thief, son of the local ruler who ran away and whose secrtely looked after by the cleric and finally some peasant warrior Dude. Second campaign is with gf and I'm planning on a Glantrian great school of magic storyline, where she'd get in the school at a very young age and the plot and world would keep expanding as she is getting older and understanding more and more about her environment. Allowing me to progressively make her discover the great city that surrounds her without overwheling her. Last campaign would be with my two smaller brothers by my idea I still a bit blurry as of now.

>>8854
This basically >>8855. But I think they mostly lack formal art education, more than mental illness in that case.

i usually prefer DSA over DnD.
Das Schwarze Auge is there any english phrase for the game? only ever heard about it in german feels like it gives a lot more freedom and is less focused on combat. DnD feels a lot like a Hack 'n Slay instead of an RPG.
But ultimately it is the DM and group who are deciding how the game is played, less so the actual rules.
e.g. a girl---friend of mine was thinking about fulfilling the role of a master, but wouldn't allow Ernst to play his Schelmin knave / prankster / imp ?. she even prepared some "secret" character trades for Ernst's new character, a female dwarf rocking the most handsome full-beard in dwarfen history. a dragon baby pet; would have been important for the campaign :3
maybe Ernst should ask again. interest was there and one of those interested in playing would have a little moar time now, since his now ex-gf wasn't rly in tabletop stuff. welp, boyfriend of master-girl-friend isn't tooo much into such things as well, but would prolly join - even if he ends up deciding to kamikaze his character relatively early in the campaign... group would prolly be of size 5-8. depending of who ends up joining. and afaik ~3 of those i currently have in mind already play in a different group :/

most of the time, lately, we played more short-term tabletop-likes. for example werewolves, secret hitler, chinese whispers extreme,... or some new tabletop i've never heard of before but someone bought it on the last games-con Spielemesse.

i might still have a *.pdf of a DSA rulebook somewhere, if i didn't end up deleting it or have forgotten to copy over when switching hardware...

depends. do you want a noble heritage? that usually gives a decent bag of starting coins. also, what kind of mental illness do you have/want? that usually is a decent nerf to balance out some other stronger character traits.
> lacking formal education
is a big nerf, thou. really limits your character selection; no mage, knight or archer. maybe a bard? or you could put the points you enabled with those nerfs into pure physical poweress and be like troll-barbarian or something. some races come with build-in mental illness anyway. so that could fit you as well. depending on race, bags of money might become a problem, thou. not every character or race is interested in money. my Schelmin, for example, had a powerful mage spell, that could *puff* gems and precious metals out of existence. Schelms could only use magery if they found it funny, thou. e.g. if you are rocking a golden armor - *puff* suddenly you stand naked in the middle of the street. my Schelmin was rly into Schadenfreude... so if you proudly present your coins... i might just *puff* them away. nearly died a few times because of that. but Schelms are very athletic - and that even works if you run away and can't use magery.

if you are not too sure about what character traits you want, you can just roll some dice as well.

at least, the name began something like that... the name was so long, that even my Schelmin had problems remembering her whole name correctly. But that usually wasn't a problem, since she barely every managed to fully introduce herself before getting interrupted anyway.
very old, self-drawn picture of her. name is because of an online-rpg-server character, where i modeled the character after my Schelmin... got banned for trolling :(

>DnD feels a lot like a Hack 'n Slay instead of an RPG.
Have to agree there. Though the BECMI rules I'm using are extremely light on rules. Especially on rules concerning classic combat. Making it easily digestible to players and allowing them to concentrate on roleplaying element when the option arrises. Plus I think that a simple, well made, door, monster, treasure can be pinacle rpg, especially for large groups. It's all a question of balance between the improv and the actual boardgame I guess. For a while too I used dungeon and dragons as a way to create new friend groups with geeky, semi-strangers I wanted to become friend with. It usually worked really well, we'd start seeing each other less and less to play tabletop and more and more because we like hanging out. Though very simple rules are necessary for this. My largest achievement in that regard was the time where I managed to gather three bachelor girls and a rugbyman partygoer chad into one coherent group that gathered every months to play in my bunker. Still very good friend with all of them, though only one girl is still bf-free the chad too...
>welp, boyfriend of master-girl-friend isn't tooo much into such things as well, but would prolly join - even if he ends up deciding to kamikaze his character relatively early in the campaign...
I know people who lost entire tabletop teams because of a jealous bf who insisted to join and played really bad on purpose to finally not come anymore. That and the fact they played 4th edition. For the group size, wouldn't 8 be way beyond manageable?

Let's try it again, just for you:
Ze Tschörman RPG is called "Das Schwarze Auge", logo in pic 1.
The English version of it is called "The Dark Eye", logo in pic 2.
BECAUSE the literal translation of "das scharze Auge" would be "the black eye", WHICH in English means getting punched in the face and thus ending up with pic 3.
And that would be neither cool nor fantasy to a Brit but just a normal Saturday night out on the town.

Any other questions?

nah, he wouldn't force himself to join. more like we would try to convince him to at least test playing a tabletop RPG like that.

> improv

never heard of it. how does it work?
serious answer: you always should have a master that allows some improv and is lenient towards the actual rules. e.g. saving you with 1hp left or something, althou the rules would kill you.

I bought stuff on eBay! I never buy stuff usually but since I fell back in a DnD frensy I decided to buy some collector’s item. Somebody was selling a creature’ catalog in a nearly perfect condition for a sixth of the price people usually sell it half in ruin.

It has beautiful old school illustration for every cool monster in the game. There’s orcs with Afro, demonic elephants with ten trunks, big booty male water elf, a lot of giant prehistoric mammals and five new different types of arachnids. Oooh what fun I’ll have reading through it and choosing what strange shit I’ll make my friends encounter.

I just inherited a nearly complete TSR Mystara collection. With the integrality pf the Gazeteers, Hollow World mostly blistered, separate rules and rules cyclopedia, Champions of Mystara, wrath of the immortal, half of the creature crucibles, creatures catalogue, a lot of modules and book of magic item and wonderous inventions. The entire collection must have a value between 1000$ and 2000$.

I’ve been wandering my mind in this fictional world for over 10 years now, I have now an unlimited first hand access to very rare ressources and lore. I’ll try to make a great game out of it. Some family members seem very motivated

You played it wrong.

The menial serfs of EC are minding their own business, until a nameless wanderer arrives in their midst.
He grabs into his pocket and pulls out a strange, edgy, yet round device.
Puzzled the unwashed masses slowly gather around the lone traveler and ask what this device does.
>Well, it randomly shows you numbers when thrown.
Still rather unenlightened the crowd asks for a demonstration.
>Okay, let's see if you get any wiser.

The uneducated crowd is about to learn about the wonders of gambling, randomness and luck, yet is too dumb to fully comprehend such things.
A hard check of 15 against the lowly collective intelligence of 5 will be necessary to actually teach the people of EC. 10 and higher wins.

LETS FUCKING RIP IT!
